1898 Medal Admiral Schley Gilt Copper
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1898 gilt copper medal honors Admiral Winfield Scott Schley, a controversial figure of the Spanish-American War. Schley commanded the Flying Squadron at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on July 3, 1898, which destroyed the Spanish Caribbean fleet. However, a bitter dispute with Admiral William T. Sampson over credit for the victory led to a court of inquiry in 1901. The gilt copper composition — base copper with a gold-colored surface treatment — creates an attractive appearance. Private medal producers including the Franklin Mint, Medallic Art Company, and numerous smaller firms have supplemented U.S. Mint production, creating a rich and diverse medallic landscape for American collectors. Schley medals are less common than Dewey medals, as the controversy surrounding his command dampened public enthusiasm for commemorating his role.
