Description
The 1897 Liberty Head Nickel is a nickel produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Liberty Head Nickels 1883-1912 series. The U.S. Mint produced 20.4 million examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 100% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by stars and the reverse displays a Roman numeral V (five) within a wreath of corn, cotton, and wheat. Struck during the Gilded Age of rapid industrialization and the great silver debates, when monetary policy shaped elections and economic destiny. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $5 to $194 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #3858.
