Description

Struck in white metal, HK-130 is the Detroit medal of 1896 marking a hundred years since the British left Fort Shelby, struck alongside the bronze HK-129 at 35 mm. Hibler and Kappen admit the event was not part of the Revolutionary War, but they include it with those anniversaries because the British withdrawal was a direct consequence of the war and its sequel. On the reverse is the state seal, with thirteen stars arranged around the lower half. The obverse pictures the old fort as a cluster of buildings around a tall flagpole flying a flag, with the legend about the British evacuation of Fort Shelby around the top and the fort's name, the year 1796, and the centennial date, Detroit, July 11, 1896, beneath the buildings. Both sides have beaded borders, and no maker is recorded.
