Description

This 1896 medal cataloged as S-326 is another Bryan Money variety from the 1896 presidential campaign. William Jennings Bryan's "Cross of Gold" speech at the Democratic National Convention — "You shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold!" — became one of the most famous speeches in American political history. Bryan Money pieces document the fierce monetary debate between gold standard advocates (generally Republicans and Eastern business interests) and free silver supporters (Democrats, Populists, and Western mining interests). Private medal producers including the Franklin Mint, Medallic Art Company, and numerous smaller firms have supplemented U.S. Mint production, creating a rich and diverse medallic landscape for American collectors. The S-326 variety represents a different design or variant from S-323 (PCGS #660264) within the extensive Bryan Money series.

Rarity Notes
