Description

This silver campaign token for the Harrison-Reid ticket from the 1892 presidential election is cataloged as DeWitt BH-1892-5. Whitelaw Reid, editor of the New York Tribune (the newspaper founded by Horace Greeley), was Harrison's running mate in 1892. The silver composition makes this a premium campaign piece, produced in limited quantities for affluent supporters or as a presentation item. Silver campaign tokens from the Gilded Age elections are consistently scarce due to the material cost that limited production runs. Harrison's 1892 campaign was personally difficult β€” his wife Caroline Harrison was dying of tuberculosis during the campaign and passed away on October 25, 1892, just two weeks before the election. Both Cleveland and Harrison suspended active campaigning out of respect for the dying First Lady. This silver token documents a campaign that was conducted under a shadow of personal tragedy for the incumbent president.
