Description
Two competition-winning designs meet on this piece, which the United States Mint struck at Philadelphia: the obverse by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and the reverse by Charles E. Barber, each chosen in a competition that paid 2,500 dollars to the winner. Saint-Gaudens shows Columbus with arms outstretched, facing left, three men behind him, and above them "Plvs Vltra," his name in Latin form and the date in Roman numerals, "Oct. XII MCCCCXCII." Barber's reverse puts the inscription in a central rectangle, from "World's Columbian Exposition" through the anniversary wording to "MDCCCXCIII to C. Emmerich & Co," with a torch at each side, a globe between two seated angels above and a ship below. Hibler and Kappen list it in copper as HK-223, 38 mm, Eglit 19, and in aluminum as HK-223a. The anniversary it marks is that of the October 1492 landfall, celebrated at Chicago from 1892.
