Description

An aluminum Machinery Hall medal, HK-191 is the companion of the reeded brass HK-190, and Eglit gives both the number 120. Its reverse pictures the hall with "850 Ft. Long. 500 Ft. Wide" and a cost of one million two hundred thousand dollars; its obverse is Columbus in a wreath under the exposition's name, spelled in the Roman manner with a V. The listing sets the size of the group at 35 mm. Hibler and Kappen also record the hall paired with the Woman's Building on HK-192 (aluminum) and HK-192a (brass). The exposition grew out of acts of Congress passed in 1890 and was financed by public stock and bonds, a city bond issue and a federal grant. Its formal dedication, on October 21, 1892, drew a crowd of about 125,000 to the Jackson Park grounds.
