1892-1893 So-Called Dollar HK-188a, The Electric Building
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
On HK-188a the Electrical Building is shown with its measurements, 345 feet wide and 700 feet long, and a cost of 401,000 dollars, framed by beading. The opposite side is the portrait shared across the Exhibition Palace dollars: Columbus turned to the left in a wreathed circle, ringed by "The World's Colvmbian Exposition" with V in place of U, and "* Chicago 1893 *" beneath. HK-188a is the silver-plated brass version, Eglit 126, between the reeded brass HK-188 and the aluminum HK-189; the listing gives the series a 35 mm size. Federal support helped build the halls it pictures: Congress settled the contest among cities in 1890 and added five million dollars, matched by a Chicago bond issue. The fair was dedicated in 1892.
