1892-1893 So-Called Dollar HK-186a, Horticultural Building
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
HK-186a, in silver-plated brass, is the middle of three metals for this Horticultural Building design, listed between the reeded brass HK-186 and the aluminum HK-187; all three carry the number Eglit 124, and the listing gives the group a 35 mm size. The obverse shows Columbus in profile to the left within an open wreath, the fair's name around him with V standing in for U. The reverse pictures the hall itself, 250 by 1,000 feet, its cost stated as 300,000 dollars. Plated versions turn up elsewhere in this Chicago run as well, on the Government, Electrical and Agricultural designs (HK-182a, HK-188a, HK-196a). The exposition opened on May 1, 1893, and by its close on November 2 had counted more than 27 million admissions. It had been dedicated in October 1892.
