Description

Columbus's flagship fills the reverse of this aluminum medal, labeled "The Santa Maria" and circled by the legend "Columbus in Sight of the New World," with a microscopic Hanson signature at lower right. The obverse returns to the fair itself, a view of the exposition buildings and grounds headed "The Worlds Columbian Exposition" with "Chicago, U.S.A." and 1893 below. Hibler and Kappen list the same obverse with a different back, three buildings stacked one above another, as HK-167a in aluminum and HK-167b in copper; the Santa Maria side turns up again on HK-204, paired with that three-building design. HK-167 is aluminum, 38 mm. The fair was laid out on the Lake Michigan shore for the four hundredth anniversary of the 1492 voyage, given its dedication in 1892 and its public opening a year later in 1893.
