Description

S. D. Childs & Co. of Chicago paired one boastful aluminum reverse with several exposition views, and this is the Agricultural Building version. The obverse shows the building with "Agricultural Building" beneath it, "Chicago 1893" around the lower edge and "World's Columbian Exposition" above. The reverse, the one first used on HK-161, presses the case for the metal: an incuse "Aluminum" on a ribbon between lines of adjectives, then the claim that a cubic foot of gold weighs 1,204 pounds while the same block of aluminum weighs 179, and finally "This Medal is Pure," with Childs's tiny signature. Its sisters on the same reverse picture the Electrical Building (HK-161a) and the Administration Building (HK-162). HK-161b is aluminum, 37 mm, listed as Eglit 218. Chicago's exposition held its dedication in October 1892 and ran until early November 1893.
