Date in normal lateral position but with 18 tilted slightly to right. However, this variety also boasts sizable die chips in the upper loop of the D in DOLLAR on the reverse, which serves as another quick diagnostic. The whole lower reverse exhibits distinctive die sinking which makes the coin field "raised and uneven" per Van Allen. # It appears the [[1889-O VAM-8 is the exact same die pair as the [[1889-O VAM-23/23A. ANACS 62 (formerly in NGC 61 holder). There are potentially other VAM 23s in NGC holders sold by Heritage in the Spring and Summer of 2006. It seems a large grouping of these coins (perhaps 10-12) became available at the same time, suggesting that a roll or partial roll of VAM 23s was graded together. The majority of these coins are slabbed in MS 62 or lower condition. The condition census above was determined by searching all of Heritage's listings for the variety. Top
