Description
The 1887 medal GW-1009 in bronze commemorates the Constitution Centennial — the hundredth anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787. Washington presided over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, and his support was essential to the document's ratification by the states. The Constitution Centennial was celebrated with ceremonies in Philadelphia and across the country. Bronze composition indicates standard commemorative production for the centennial celebrations. The GW-1009 design places Washington in his role as president of the Constitutional Convention, emphasizing his contribution to the creation of the governing document. The 1887 Constitution Centennial was the last major founding-era centennial, following the Declaration centennial (1876) and the Evacuation centennial (1883). It generated a significant body of commemorative medals.
