Description

This bronze medal cataloged as GW-1004 commemorates the Chatham Artillery, produced circa 1886. The Chatham Artillery of Savannah, Georgia, is one of the oldest military units in the United States, founded in 1786 and still active today. The unit's connection to George Washington is direct — Washington presented the artillery company with two brass cannons captured from the British during the Revolution when he visited Savannah in 1791 during his Southern Tour. These "Washington Guns" remained in the possession of the Chatham Artillery and became among the unit's most treasured relics. The 1886 centennial of the Chatham Artillery's founding was the occasion for this commemorative medal, which honors both the unit's history and its personal connection to Washington. The bronze composition was appropriate for a military commemorative medal intended for distribution to unit members and supporters.
