Description
The 1883 medal GW-993 in white metal commemorates Newburgh Headquarters in the less expensive white metal composition. This is the companion piece to the bronze version (PCGS #657883), produced for broader distribution at the centennial observance of Washington's final military headquarters. The Newburgh Headquarters centennial in 1883 was a significant local celebration, though less prominent than the Evacuation of New York centennial held the same year. White metal versions allowed wider public participation in the commemoration. The Hasbrouck House at Newburgh was later preserved as one of the earliest historic house museums in the United States, reflecting the continuing importance of Washington's headquarters in American historical memory. Washington medals have been collected since the early nineteenth century, when numismatists first recognized the extraordinary variety of pieces bearing the first president's likeness as a coherent and historically significant collecting area.
