Description
The 1883 medal GW-1012 in white metal without hole is the standard (unholed) white metal version of the Washington, Knox, and Clinton Evacuation medal. Without the suspension hole, this piece was intended as a pocket piece or display medal rather than a wearable badge. The unholed white metal version occupies a middle ground between the premium bronze version and the practical holed badge version. It offered the light weight and bright appearance of white metal at low cost while preserving the medal's integrity as a display piece. Collectors distinguish between holed and unholed versions of the same design, as each represents a different intended use and has a different survival profile in the marketplace. Washington medals have been collected since the early nineteenth century, when numismatists first recognized the extraordinary variety of pieces bearing the first president's likeness as a coherent and historically significant collecting area.
Rarity Notes
