Description
This white metal medal cataloged as GW-1008A is the mass-market version of the George Washington Evacuation Day centennial medal, produced circa 1883. White metal provided the most affordable option for centennial celebration souvenirs, making this version accessible to the general public attending Evacuation Day festivities. The GW-1008A design is shared across bronze (PCGS #785425), silver (PCGS #785423), and this white metal version, allowing collectors to assemble a complete composition set. White metal Evacuation Day medals were produced in the largest quantities of the three compositions, as they were priced for mass consumption at the civic celebrations. Despite their affordability, white metal medals reproduce die details with excellent clarity due to the softness of the alloy, making even inexpensive strikings visually appealing when fresh. The survival rate in good condition is lower than bronze or silver versions due to the fragility of white metal.
Rarity Notes
