Description
HK-596 is the silver proof striking of an official medal of the German-American Bicentennial, celebrated in Philadelphia on October 6, 1883, two hundred years after German emigrants settled Germantown, once a separate town and later part of the city. The celebration committee designed and issued it, and William H. Warner & Bro. of Philadelphia struck it. The obverse joins two women's heads facing right, one headband reading "Columbia" and the other "German." The reverse carries Germantown's seal, the years 1683 and 1883 on shields, and a three-leaf clover holding a grapevine, flax and a loom, over the Latin motto "Vinum Linum et Textrinum," wine, linen and weaving. White metal and bronzed copper versions are HK-597 and HK-597a. Silver, proof, 35 mm.
