Description

Silver is the last of the four metals Hibler and Kappen list for the Newburgh centennial medal of 1883, and HK-135b is that striking, 41 mm. The medal belongs to a celebration held at Newburgh, New York, on October 18, 1883, a hundred years after peace was proclaimed and the army disbanded: its obverse frames the headquarters building with "1783 -- Centennial -- 1883" and "Proclamation of peace, disbandment of the army." A. Demarest of New York cut the dies and signed the obverse in tiny letters. The reverse honors Washington with a coat of arms surrounded by the words "He was most nobly crowned by refusing to be crowned," thirteen stars, and a border naming the arms as his family's. The other strikings are bronze (HK-134), white metal (HK-135) and copper-plated (HK-135a).
