Description
The 1883 bronze medal GW-993 commemorates Newburgh Headquarters, Washington's final military headquarters at the Hasbrouck House in Newburgh, New York. Washington occupied this headquarters from April 1782 through August 1783, and it was here that he rejected the suggestion that he become king and quelled the Newburgh Conspiracy among discontented officers. The 1883 centennial of the army's disbandment from Newburgh generated commemorative activity. The Newburgh Headquarters holds special significance as the place where Washington demonstrated his commitment to civilian government by refusing to seize power and by persuading his officers to remain loyal to Congress. This restraint is widely regarded as one of his most consequential decisions. Bronze composition indicates standard commemorative production for the centennial observance.
