(1882) Silver Token Rulau Co-De-5, National Mining & Industrial Exposition
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Silver commemorative token for the National Mining and Industrial Exposition held in Denver, Colorado, 1882. Denver's mining exposition showcased the mineral wealth and industrial development of the Rocky Mountain West during the height of the Colorado silver mining boom. The Leadville silver strikes of 1877-1878 and subsequent discoveries had made Colorado one of the world's leading silver producers. The silver composition of this token is particularly appropriate given the exposition's focus on silver mining. Exposition tokens from the American West are scarcer than those from Eastern cities. Silver, 30mm. The late 19th century advertising revolution extended to tokens, with Gilded Age merchants using metal pieces as portable promotions in an era when commercial competition drove innovation in marketing. Collector interest in Rulau-cataloged tokens continues to grow as the series gains recognition beyond specialized exonumia circles.
Rarity Notes
Very rare. Silver exposition token from the height of the Colorado mining boom. Western exposition tokens are significantly scarcer than Eastern examples. The silver composition is thematically perfect for a mining exposition. Collected by Colorado numismatists, Western Americana enthusiasts, and mining history specialists.
