Description

=1880-S VAM-42 Doubled Date= Discovered by Bill Fivaz, November 1977. 42 III2 21 ∙ C3a (Doubled Date) (?) Obverse III2 21 – Entire date doubled faintly at very bottom right. First 8 doubled strongly on surface of lower loop. Second 8 doubled at lower left outside of upper loop. 0 doubled on left and right outside at top and bottom. Reverse C3a – Some specimens show a large die chip on wreath leaf opposite NI of UNITED and a smaller die chip on field next to I of UNITED as for 1880-S VAM-55. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # The reverse is the same as VAM 55. The obverse may or may not be. VAM 42 is cataloged as having the same obverse as VAM 31, while VAM 55 is different. These obverses are truly evil mimics of each other, especially if you look only at the 0 in the date. The doubling on the bottom of the first 8 is strong on VAM 31, weak on the VAM 55. The die polishing lines on both do not match each other. It could be that VAM 42 was a cataloging error and all coins with this reverse are VAM 55. It is not known if VAM 42 as cataloged exists. # *Duplicate Alert - see VAM-55.*
