Description

=1879-S VAM-57 Open 9, Over Polished Wreath Bow= Discovered by Brian Raines, June 2004. 57 III 22e · C3p (Open 9, Over Polished Wreath Bow) (184) Obverse III 22e – Same obverse die as 1879-S VAM-34B. ''Die markers''– Diagonal line from left side of lower cotton leaf, diagonal polishing line between cotton boll stems and die chip dot on Phrygian cap fold (only seen on 1879-S VAM-34B discovery piece, probably PMD.). Reverse C3p – Severely over polished lower reverse with parts of wreath bow missing and some disconnected leaves in lower wreath. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # This obverse die was used on 1879-S VAM-34B & 1879-S VAM-57. # This reverse die was used on 1879-S VAM-74. # There were "thickness" issues reported by the Director of the San Francisco Mint in early 1879. To solve this, the Mint apparently planed down the reverse of several dies. Therefore this VAM and 1879-S VAM-62 may be one of the first reverse dies used in the production of 1879-S coins.
