Description

=1878-P VAM-221B Cut Down A, Doubled Left Reverse, Die Gouges Reverse= Discovered in May 2012 by Mark Witkower II1 - C3b (Cut Down A, Doubled Left Reverse, Die Gouges Reverse) (?) Obverse II1 - Die chip on forehead front. Same die as VAM-221-1. Reverse C3b - Numerous vertical die gouges and scratches at junction of lower part of eagle's neck and upper breast. Several long vertical die scratches on upper part of eagle's right wing and couple of gouges at bottom of wing extending into field. Several gouges in lower part of eagles left wing. Vertical gouge at top of upper tail feathers. Die likely retired early. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # There is an Early Die State (EDS) of this coin, which is separately supported by the SSDC Registry as such, with bolder obverse features, strong scribbling in the wing and no evidence of it on the eagle's breast. The one specimen so far found (by John Coxe) is a prooflike and any others to come to light will more likely also be.
