=1878-P VAM-164 Broken R= Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1965. Reverse discovered by Melvin Carmichael, August 1951. 164 (revised) II/I 27 - B2c (Broken R) (180) Obverse II/I 27 - I,B, & T doubled to left in LIBERTY. Double right stars 1, 3, and 4. Metal on P. Broken upper R in PLURIBUS. P, L, R, and B in PLURIBUS doubled on right side. UNU of UNUM doubled below upper serifs. ''Key identifier''- Vertical line left end of cap ribbon. Reverse B2c -Broken R in TRUST results in TIUST. Weak feathers next to eagle's right leg. 3 horizontal die gouges between eagle's right wing & body. Rev has a closed o, broken r in TRUST. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # The VAM 164 is one of the most misattributed coins in this group. The P in PLURIBUS does resemble the one on the VAM 166. HOWEVER, there is a difference. The left foot of the 164 has a little spike coming out over the foot. The 166 DOES NOT. If you get this, you won't misattribute this coin unless the coin is very low grade. More attributes will help you narrow down the 164.
