=1878-P VAM-163 Shifted U= Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1965. This coin is a Top 30 1878 Variety 163 II/I 26 B2c (Shifted U) (194) Obverse II/I 26 - Slightly doubled LIBERTY ( L, I, B, and T only) shifted to left. Doubled E, U, R, and M in E PLURIBUS UNUM ( U and M are particularly large shifts). Doubled 7 star on left. Doubled 18 n date. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # Overpolished ear. # This is the one VAM from 160 to 188 that can be attributed SOLELY by looking at the first U in PLURIBUS. If you LEARN THIS you will never miss another VAM 163. If you miss this incredibly doubled left upright, you will have a tough time with this coin. # The LDS is lightly clashed, but with no letter transfer. There is also a thin terminal die crack from the rim though the 7 that goes part of the way to the hair. # Reverse is shared with VAM-167. This attribute always gets this author looking for the VAM 123.
