1878-P VAM-39 7/8 Tailfeather 7/5 variety Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, April 1965. This coin is a Hit List 40 Morgan VAM. '''39 II 2 B/Ai (5TF) (179) ''' '''Obverse II2 -''' ''Die marker'' - Diagonal die scratch up from top right cotton leaf. Also VAMs 34 & 41. Middle die state with polished nostril and die clash marks. '''Reverse B/Ai''' - Five tail feathers ends showing; between 2 and 3, 3 and 4, 4 and 5, 5 and 6 and under 6 TF. Design remains in leaves of branch, below branch on left, and inside wreath bow. Die chips around R in TRUST. Another attribution feature is looking at the underside of the olive branch to the left of the eagle and above the arrow feathers. # All VAM-39's appear to be clashed, and are actually the sub-variety [[1878-P VAM-39A.
