Description
This 1877 brass token, cataloged as Pa-Ph 156, commemorates the International Exposition held in Philadelphia. The 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia was the first major world's fair held in the United States, celebrating the one-hundredth anniversary of American independence, and follow-up exhibitions continued into 1877. The exposition attracted millions of visitors and generated enormous quantities of commemorative medals, tokens, and souvenirs. The Pa-Ph catalog prefix identifies this within the Philadelphia section of the standard token reference. World's fair and exposition tokens constitute one of the most popular specialties in American numismatics, as these events produced vast quantities of medallic memorabilia documenting the technological, industrial, and cultural achievements showcased at each fair. The brass composition was standard for mass-produced exposition souvenirs.
