Description

This white metal Centennial token (Pa-Ph 778) was issued by Jas. Thornton's, a general merchant of Philadelphia. James Thornton, a Philadelphia merchant with four distinct die varieties spanning Pa-Ph 774-778. Possessive suggests establishment known by proprietor name. The tin-lead alloy's affordability allowed even small merchants to commission token runs large enough for meaningful distribution during the Exposition's six-month run. Manufactured by Lingg & Bro. of Philadelphia, the die-sinking firm that dominated merchant token production throughout the Centennial season. Merchants who issued Centennial tokens gained a portable advertising medium that visitors would carry home to cities across the nation, extending the token's promotional reach far beyond Philadelphia. These tokens serve as a commercial directory of 1876 Philadelphia, preserving in metal the names, trades, and locations of businesses that have long since disappeared from the city's streets.
