Description

Liberty Bell/Our 100th Year issued this white metal souvenir token (Holland-158) as advertising during the 1876 Centennial. A purely patriotic token celebrating the Liberty Bell and America's hundredth anniversary, without merchant advertising. Non-merchant patriotic issue served purely as a souvenir. White metal pieces sat at the base of the Centennial souvenir pyramid, above only paper ephemera in affordability and below copper, brass, and the rare silver strikings in collector value. Made by the Lingg die-sinking establishment, which had positioned itself as the primary supplier of merchant tokens for the Centennial. Spread across 285 acres of Fairmount Park, the Centennial featured 37 participating nations and tens of thousands of exhibits ranging from fine art to industrial machinery to agricultural innovations. Merchants patronized the Lingg workshop because the firm handled every aspect of token production, from initial die design to final striking in the customer's choice of metal.

Rarity Notes

Holland-158 in white metal is encountered with moderate frequency in the Centennial token market. Condition census runs from well-worn to occasional choice examples.
