Description

HK-83b is a gilt medal of the Centennial art gallery, the building lettered "Centennial / Art gallery" above and "Philadelphia / In memorial" below, with William H. Key's small signature at its lower left corner. The exhibition's art display, according to the HK history, awakened the country to the work of the world's artists, and numerous art schools and societies followed. The reverse is the lettered die used across Key's building medals, six lines framed by 1776 and 1876 on the progress of a free nation over its first century, and at its lower edge the 1874 patent notice of Hartell & Letchworth. The art gallery medal was struck in copper (HK-83), silver (HK-83a), gilt and white metal (HK-84). The art gallery side was also combined with Horticultural Hall on HK-89. Gilt, 43 mm.
