Description

HK-59 is titled for its reverse, the American Colonies scene: two soldiers and a woodsman inside a fort, 1776 beneath, and an all-seeing eye within a rayed star set between "American" and "Colonies." Hibler and Kappen file it with the Liberty Seated dollars, since its obverse is Soley's seated Liberty under "Free and United States," dated 1876, a figure close to Longacre's pattern trade dollar design. This is the white metal version; silver (HK-56), copper (HK-57) and gilt (HK-58) were struck from the same dies. Separately, the fort scene was paired with Washington's bust in the American Colonies dollars HK-71 to HK-72b, including a silver proof. Taken together, the dies show the 1776 past and the 1876 present on opposite faces of one piece. White metal, 38 mm.
