Description
HK-28 is a brass Liberty Bell and Independence Hall medal of the Centennial period, one of a series struck and issued in Philadelphia by the firm of Deihl to a design Hibler and Kappen credit to Key. This is the small-bell type: the bell hangs from its supporting beam with no lettering on it, ringed by the verse from Leviticus "Proclaim liberty throughout the land unto all the inhabitants thereof." The other side shows Independence Hall with two trees and a statue on the grounds in front and the date 1776. Hibler and Kappen note that the small-bell pieces were being struck as early as 1872, years ahead of the 1876 celebration they were made for. The same dies were also used for copper (HK-27) and silver (HK-27b). This piece is brass, 38 mm.
