1876 HK-27b, US Centennial Expo-Liberty Bell Dollar
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
HK-27b is the silver striking of the small-bell Liberty Bell dollar, the earlier of Deihl's two bell designs; Hibler and Kappen say pieces of this type were struck from as early as 1872, four years before the 1876 celebration. Here the bell is modest in size and hangs plainly from its beam, without the lettering of the large-bell type, while the legend spells out "Leviticus" in full and reads "The Liberty Bell," with a star dividing the verse. The reverse departs from the bare-lawn Independence Hall of the large-bell pieces: the building stands behind two trees and a statue, "Independence Hall" above and the single date 1776 below, within a beaded border. Key is credited with the design. The same pair of dies served for copper (HK-27), brass (HK-28) and white metal (HK-29). Silver, 38 mm.
