Description

The Philadelphia firm of Deihl struck HK-23, the silver version of the large-bell Liberty Bell dollar, to a design by Key; Hibler and Kappen say the large-bell pieces were being made from 1874, ahead of the Centennial. The bell nearly fills the obverse and carries its own lettering in shortened lines, including the founders' names "Pass and Stow, Philada" and the date "MDCCLIII," with 1776 to the left, 1876 to the right, "Liberty Bell" above and the Leviticus verse around, a six-pointed star between its last and first words. The reverse pictures Independence Hall with no trees before it, the same two dates at the sides and "Commenced 1729 / Finished 1734" below, plus Key's tiny signature. The design was also struck in bronze (HK-24), gilt (HK-24a), copper (HK-25) and white metal (HK-26). Silver, 38 mm.
