Description
Struck in copper for the 1876 Centennial International Exposition, this token (Pa-Ph 933A) was commissioned by Harbach's Original Walnut Candy, confectionery and stereopticon dealer of Philadelphia, at 807-809 Filbert Street. Theodore J. Harbach's confectionery, famous for 'Harbach's Original Walnut Candy,' also dealt in magic lanterns and stereopticons. An NGC-graded Prooflike MS-61 specimen is recorded as 'Top Pop' (finest known) for the variety. Combined ten-variety series spanning Pa-Ph 120 and Pa-Ph 930B-937 makes Harbach the largest confectionery token program. Struck in copper, a mid-tier composition for Centennial tokens. Copper pieces cost more than white metal but less than brass, offering a balance of durability and visual appeal. Dies for this merchant token were produced at the Lingg workshop on North 8th Street, which served as the central production facility for Centennial advertising pieces.
