Coin Details
Description
Harbach's Original Walnut Candy issued this copper souvenir token (Pa-Ph 930) as advertising during the 1876 Centennial. Theodore J. Harbach's confectionery, famous for 'Harbach's Original Walnut Candy,' also dealt in magic lanterns and stereopticons. The business at 809 Filbert Street was still operating in 1885, nearly a decade after the Centennial. Harbach's signature product was walnut candy, a Philadelphia confectionery specialty featured prominently on the token. Copper was a favored composition for merchants willing to invest more than the minimum white metal cost, producing tokens with a warmer color and greater durability. Manufactured by Lingg & Bro. of Philadelphia, whose workshop became synonymous with Centennial merchant token production during 1876. The Centennial drew nearly ten million visitors to Philadelphia between May and November 1876, a figure that transformed the city's economy and created a booming market for portable souvenirs.
