Description

Wm. Burwell & Bro. issued this copper souvenir token (Pa-Ph 850A) as advertising during the 1876 Centennial. William Burwell and Brother, Philadelphia merchants appearing under multiple names reflecting partnership changes. Missing Wm on one variant is die-engraving omission. Copper was a favored composition for merchants willing to invest more than the minimum white metal cost, producing tokens with a warmer color and greater durability. Lingg & Bro. produced tokens for more Centennial merchants than any other die-sinking firm in the region. These tokens serve as a commercial directory of 1876 Philadelphia, preserving in metal the names, trades, and locations of businesses that have long since disappeared from the city's streets. The Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 marked the first time the United States hosted an official World's Fair, using the occasion to display a century of national achievement.
