Description

Issued by Burr & Witsil during the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, this copper token (Pa-Ph 840A) advertises a dry goods and hardware merchants operating from Philadelphia. Philadelphia merchants who commissioned eight die varieties across multiple metals. Multiple die combinations indicate an ongoing relationship with Lingg throughout the exposition season. Brass variants survive in smaller numbers as they cost more to produce. The copper composition provides a distinctive warm reddish color that develops an attractive brown patina over time. Copper Centennial tokens survive in moderate quantities. Manufactured by Lingg & Bro. of Philadelphia, the primary source for custom merchant tokens during the 1876 Centennial celebrations.
