Description

Struck in copper for the 1876 Centennial International Exposition, this token (Pa-Ph 720A) was commissioned by N.H. Rice, general merchant of Philadelphia. A Philadelphia merchant who issued five Centennial token varieties spanning Pa-Ph 720-723 and Pa-Ph 930, with dual catalog placement reflecting separate reference sections. Five varieties made Rice prolific among individuals. Dual catalog placement reflects separate sections. Struck in copper, a mid-tier composition for Centennial tokens. Copper pieces cost more than white metal but less than brass, offering a balance of durability and visual appeal. Manufactured by Lingg & Bro. of Philadelphia, the primary source for custom merchant tokens during the 1876 Centennial celebrations. Spread across 285 acres of Fairmount Park, the Centennial featured 37 participating nations and tens of thousands of exhibits ranging from fine art to industrial machinery to agricultural innovations.
