Description

This copper die mule (Pa-Ph 230) combines two unrelated Centennial token dies: the Centennial commemorative die featuring George Washington portrait bust paired with the die 262F. The Lingg firm created mule combinations by pairing obverse and reverse dies from different merchant or commemorative series, producing distinctive cross-die varieties. Mule combinations were produced in limited quantities, making them sought after by advanced Centennial token collectors. Copper tokens were a popular mid-range choice for Centennial souvenirs, offering durability and an attractive reddish tone that distinguished them from the more common white metal issues. The standard reference for Centennial tokens uses the Rulau catalog, where tokens from different cities receive distinct prefixes (Pa-Ph, NY-NY, etc.) and each die/metal combination gets its own entry.

Rarity Notes

This mule variety (Pa-Ph 230) in copper is uncommon. Die mules represent a specialized collecting area within the broader Centennial token series.
