Description

A copper mule token (Pa-Ph 225), this piece was created by pairing the Exposition building obverse die depicting the Main Exhibition Building at the Centennial grounds in Fairmount Park and the die 262F. The Lingg firm created mule combinations by pairing obverse and reverse dies from different merchant or commemorative series, producing distinctive cross-die varieties. Mule combinations were produced in limited quantities, making them sought after by advanced Centennial token collectors. The copper composition provides a distinctive warm reddish color that develops an attractive brown patina over time. Copper Centennial tokens survive in moderate quantities. Token varieties ranged from inexpensive white metal pieces distributed freely to visitors, through mid-range copper and brass issues, to rare silver presentation pieces for collectors.

Rarity Notes

As a die mule, Pa-Ph 225 in copper is inherently scarcer than standard single-issuer tokens. These cross-die combinations were created as collector novelties by Lingg & Bro.
