Description
This copper Centennial token (NY-NY 830A) was issued by J.W. Scott & Co., a stamp and coin dealer of New York City. J. Walter Scott and Company, prominent NYC stamp and coin dealers who published the Scott Stamp Catalogue. Scott stamp catalogue became the most widely used philatelic reference. Copper tokens were a popular mid-range choice for Centennial souvenirs, offering durability and an attractive reddish tone that distinguished them from the more common white metal issues. The Lingg brothers ran the most productive die-sinking shop in Centennial-era Philadelphia, cutting custom advertising dies for merchants across multiple trades. The Rulau catalog assigns each Centennial token a geographic prefix and number — Pa-Ph for Philadelphia issues, NY-NY for New York — with separate entries for each metal variant of a given die.
