Description

Struck in bronze for the 1876 Centennial International Exposition, this token (Pa-Ph 848A) was commissioned by Burr & Witsil, dry goods and hardware merchants of Philadelphia. Philadelphia merchants who commissioned eight die varieties across multiple metals. White metal issues were most widely distributed as inexpensive keepsakes for ten million visitors. Multiple die combinations indicate an ongoing relationship with Lingg throughout the exposition season. Bronze tokens combined durability with an attractive golden-brown patina that developed over time, making them a popular mid-range choice for Centennial souvenirs. Lingg & Bro. produced tokens for more Centennial merchants than any other die-sinking firm in the region. The Centennial Exposition of 1876 brought the World's Fair tradition to American shores for the first time, transforming Philadelphia into an international showcase for the centennial of independence.
