Description

This brass Centennial token (Pa-Ph 922B) was issued by Shamgar S. Hand, a general merchant of Philadelphia. A Philadelphia merchant with a distinctive biblical name (from Judges 3:31) who issued five Centennial token varieties. Also appears as 'Shagmar' on some dies, a probable engraving error. Five varieties span both spellings. Biblical name Shamgar from Judges 3:31. Brass tokens featured a distinctive gold-like appearance that elevated them above copper and white metal pieces in the Centennial souvenir hierarchy. Manufactured by the Lingg firm, the dominant producer of merchant tokens during the 1876 Centennial season. The Lingg firm's comprehensive service included die cutting, metal selection, and striking, allowing merchants to order complete runs of customized tokens in their preferred compositions.
