Description

Thomas DePuy issued this brass souvenir token (Pa-Ph 891B) as advertising during the 1876 Centennial. A Philadelphia merchant who commissioned seven varieties across copper, brass, and white metal. Multiple die varieties suggest DePuy operated a concession for heavy foot traffic. Seven varieties demonstrate production flexibility. Brass Centennial tokens were typically reserved for preferred customers or sold at a modest premium over white metal pieces, resulting in smaller surviving populations. Lingg & Bro. operated the largest Centennial token production facility in Philadelphia, serving merchants across the city. The Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 marked the first time the United States hosted an official World's Fair, using the occasion to display a century of national achievement.
