Coin Details
Description
Struck in brass for the 1876 Centennial International Exposition, this token (Pa-Ph 712B) was commissioned by J. Reed, general merchant of Philadelphia. A Philadelphia merchant who commissioned five Centennial token varieties spanning Pa-Ph 710-712 in standard and variant die combinations. Pa-Ph 710-712 places Reed among mid-range entries. Multiple metals allowed broad white metal and reserved brass. Struck in brass (a copper-zinc alloy), a premium composition for Centennial tokens. The golden color made brass pieces stand out among the more common white metal and copper tokens. Lingg & Bro. supplied the majority of Centennial advertising tokens from their centrally located Philadelphia shop. The merchant tokens from the 1876 Centennial preserve a snapshot of Philadelphia's commercial life, documenting businesses ranging from restaurants and hotels to dry goods stores and hardware dealers.
