Description
The 1875 (S) Seated Liberty Quarter, struck at the San Francisco Mint, is part of the Seated Liberty Quarters 1838-1891 collection. The U.S. Mint produced 680,000 examples, making this ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 13% of production. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Minted during Reconstruction and the Gilded Age, as the nation healed from civil war and debated the role of silver and gold in the monetary system. The San Francisco Mint, a Gold Rush-era institution, now specializes in proof and collector coinage. Estimated market value ranges from $67 to $1.4K depending on grade and condition.
