Description
This copper token cataloged as GW-657 is the copper version of the centennial advertising patriotic piece, produced circa 1875. While the brass version (PCGS #789065) imitates gold, this copper striking develops a rich brown patina that gives it a more traditional, antique appearance over time. The "Patriotic" designation in the title indicates this token combined commercial advertising with patriotic centennial imagery, making it both a business promotion and a celebration of American independence. Copper was the most common composition for tokens of this era and generally survives in better condition than white metal or tinned versions. The centennial of 1876 was the largest public celebration in American history to that point, and the commercial exploitation of patriotic sentiment through tokens and medals was unprecedented in scale. Collectors of centennial memorabilia seek specimens in all available metals, making both the brass and copper versions of GW-657 desirable within a comprehensive centennial collection.
Rarity Notes
