Description
This copper medal cataloged as GW-837, struck from the second obverse die, features the theme "Level, Plumb & Square" with work attributed to Robert Lovett Jr., produced circa 1875. The phrase "Level, Plumb & Square" is drawn from Masonic ritual and symbolism, referring to the working tools of a Master Mason that represent equality, uprightness, and virtue. Washington's prominent role in American Freemasonry β he served as Worshipful Master of Alexandria Lodge No. 22 and was inaugurated using a Masonic Bible β made him a natural subject for Masonic-themed medals. Robert Lovett Jr.'s engraving brought exceptional artistry to these pieces, and his Masonic Washington medals are among the finest privately produced American medals of the nineteenth century. The second-obverse die designation indicates this is a later version with subtle differences from the original portrait die. The copper composition allowed broad distribution within the Masonic community.
